The Effects of a Literature Based Reading Program on First Grade Students' Reading Comprehension Performance : a practicum research report presented to the faculty of the School of Education, Texas Wesleyan College, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science, November 1988, June 15, 2026

A practicum research report examining the impact of a literature-based reading program on the reading comprehension performance of first grade students. The study compares two instructional approaches: language-centered activities using literature and skills-based instruction using basal readers. Forty first grade students were randomly assigned to two groups and assessed on reading readiness and listening comprehension before and after a seven-week instructional period. Results indicate improvements in retelling ability and sequencing events in the literature-based group, with both groups showing gains in reading readiness skills.
