Title and lyrics for the vocal score based upon Alfred Lloyd Tennyson's poem "Break, Break, Break"
"Break, Break, Break" is a short, sad, lyrical poem in which the speaker mourns the loss of a friend or lover, and imagines that everyone has someone to love but him.

Anson first used his initials or his name in print to autograph his compositions. He later used the musical notation of his initials "G.D.A." on the treble clef and bass cleff staffs.
